Bill Rozier on Winning Logos
I attended a talk today on entrepreneurial marketing by Bill Rozier the VP of Global Marketing at Ciena. He had some interesting tips on logo development for startups.
First off, the basics. There are two different types of logos. The traditional logo, which is a combination of text and an image and a word-mark a graphical representation of the company name.

A traditional logo

A very recognizable wordmark.
Wordmarks are more recognizeable than traditional logos, however some logos are particulary effective in global branding. Rozier, suggests that formulating a great logo is particularly important for branding your corporate image. Don’t let your wife design your logo, hire a professional and allocate the funds to do it right.
Apple for instance revised their logo until they finally settled on the iconic apple image we know today.

Rozier also argues that the most important thing for a startup is a well defined corporate image. There is probably someone doing what you want to do already, what sets you apart is your image and your story. I agree with Rozier on this. Being able to clearly define your value proposition, not in technical terms, but rather in what your company is striving to acheive.
